Scope Note

This crosswalk compares BFO's Role (a Realizable Entity, the other branch of Specifically Dependent Continuant alongside Quality), DOLCE's Role treatment (formalized via OntoClean meta-properties: anti-rigid, founded/dependent — but see correction below: this is not part of core DOLCE), UFO's Role (anti-rigid and relationally dependent, paired with Relator), and SUMO's SocialRole (a subclass of Attribute), completing Object's sibling pair under Continuant alongside docs/crosswalks/concepts/quality.md.

Correction (2026-07-01), following direct primary-source verification: this crosswalk originally cited DOLCE's Role treatment to xwkont:ref:dolce-wonderweb-d18 with an acknowledged locator uncertainty. That uncertainty is now resolved, and the resolution is more significant than "which paper" — it's a scope correction. The 2022 comprehensive DOLCE paper (Borgo et al., xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022, fetched and read directly) states explicitly: "DOLCE does not formalize functions and roles." What this crosswalk calls "DOLCE's Role" is actually from separate DOLCE-driven literature (Borgo et al., 2010; Masolo et al., 2004) — extension work built on DOLCE, not core DOLCE theory itself. This is the same kind of finding as information-artifact.md's IAO/DOLCE-Lite-Plus situation: a real, citable analog exists, but it lives in extension literature, not the core specification.

Update (2026-07-01), following direct primary-source verification of Masolo et al. (2004) itself: this crosswalk's uncertainty-003 (whether DOLCE-driven Role literature has a term equivalent to UFO's Relator) is now resolved. The 2004 paper's own apparatus — Description, Concept, Role, and the classification relation CF(x, y, t) — has no reified entity that mediates or acts as truthmaker for a relationship between specific bearers the way UFO's Relator does. Its closest construct, Description, instead defines a Concept/Role in general (a "context" or "social convention"), not a particular relationship instance; roles here are unary predicates that classify entities (CF), not binary relational particulars. See Source Definitions and Uncertainty for the verified picture. Separately, this pass also noticed a citation-precision issue: the "Borgo et al., 2010" citation used alongside Masolo et al. (2004) for DOLCE-driven Role literature (in both this crosswalk and xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022's own text) resolves to Borgo, Carrara, Garbacz & Vermaas (2010), "Formalizations of functions within the DOLCE ontology" — a paper about functions, not roles specifically. Role content should be attributed to Masolo et al. (2004) alone; the "Borgo et al., 2010" pairing appears to be the 2022 paper's own imprecision, not a distinct roles source this crosswalk failed to check.

This crosswalk confirms, rather than introduces, quality.md's central finding. SUMO's SocialRole is a subclass of RelationalAttribute, itself a partition of Attribute — the same abstract-entity category quality.md found for SUMO's Quality analog, confirmed directly against SUMO's primary Merge.kif source (2026-07-01). This is not a coincidence limited to Quality: it's a systematic pattern across SUMO's whole dependent-particular family. Where BFO/DOLCE/UFO treat both Quality and Role as particulars dependent on or connected to a concrete bearer (via inherence, OntoClean meta-properties, or relational dependence), SUMO classifies both under the same abstract Attribute branch — SUMO's own documentation defines SocialRole as "the Class of all Attributes that specify the position or status of a CognitiveAgent within an Organization or other Group."

Exclusions: this crosswalk does not fully formalize OntoClean's meta-property apparatus (rigidity, identity, unity, dependence) or UFO's Relator theory beyond what's needed to place Role within them.

Update (2026-07-02), ADR-0015 buildout: extended to GFO, YAMATO, TUpper, and GUM — the eighth and last of the 8 existing concept crosswalks to receive the buildout. GFO has the richest Role taxonomy of any source examined in this repository: Role (a Concrete individual) subdivides into Processual_role (a dependent process, "roles with a process as context"), Relational_role (Dependent, role_of some Relator — directly paralleling UFO's own Role/Relator pairing found in relation.md), and, most strikingly, Social_role, which GFO explicitly classifies as Independentowl:disjointWith Dependent. This directly contradicts the shared foundational assumption BFO, DOLCE-driven literature, and UFO all make: that a role is, by its nature, a dependent particular requiring a context or bearer. GFO's own Social_role says otherwise for at least that one role subtype. YAMATO's own text places role squarely in the dependent-particular camp instead: "The notion of quality role satisfies context-dependence which is one of the most important properties of roles. In the case of teacher role, a school is its context in which teacher role is defined" — an example directly comparable to BFO's "student role... university." YAMATO's text further states "roles are used in defining all the types in YAMATO," a more foundational role for the Role concept than any other source examined in this repository, though the paper itself defers full elaboration to a separate publication (Mizoguchi 2007, not independently fetched) and its Hozo implementation tool. TUpper again reifies nothing — "role" appears only informally inside participates_in's prose gloss ("x plays some role that is not pre-specified"), never as a class. GUM's RolePlaying continues the same pattern already found for its Information-Artifact and Relation analogs (information-artifact.md, relation.md): it is a relation type (rdfs:subClassOf Symbolization), not an object/entity type — GUM consistently reifies this whole family of content as participant-relations rather than dependent entities.

Epistemic note: BFO, DOLCE, UFO, and SUMO content is now all verified directly against primary sources. BFO and SUMO: bfo-core.ttl, Merge.kif (fetched and read 2026-07-01). DOLCE: xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022 (arXiv preprint) and xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004 itself (AAAI-hosted PDF), both extracted via manual PDF-stream decompression since no PDF-text-extraction tool is otherwise available in this environment. UFO: the 2021 Applied Ontology paper's own Role and Relator passages, extracted with the same technique (reusing the extraction already performed for object.md/process.md).

Source Definitions and Contextual Notes

Source Term or identifier Dimension Claim type Definition, quotation, or paraphrase Reference Locator Notes
BFO Role (BFO_0000023) technical direct quotation "(Elucidation) A role b is a realizable entity such that b exists because there is some single bearer that is in some special physical, social, or institutional set of circumstances in which this bearer does not have to be & b is not such that, if it ceases to exist, then the physical make-up of the bearer is thereby changed." skos:altLabel: "externally-grounded realizable entity." Examples: "The priest role; the student role; the role of subject in a clinical trial; the role of a stone in marking a property boundary." xwkont:ref:bfo-2020 verified: bfo-core.ttl, class BFO_0000023, fetched and read directly 2026-07-01 Confirms the earlier paraphrase closely; "Mary bears a student role at a university" is this crosswalk's own illustrative gloss on BFO's "student role" example, not a direct quotation.
DOLCE core "DOLCE does not formalize functions and roles" technical direct quotation "DOLCE does not formalize functions and roles, although these have been widely investigated and represented in DOLCE-driven approaches (Borgo et al., 2010; Masolo et al., 2004)." xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022 verified: arXiv preprint 2308.01597, manually extracted 2026-07-01 This is the key correction: Role is not part of core DOLCE theory at all.
DOLCE-driven approaches (not core DOLCE) Role philosophical direct quotation "Roles are represented as (social) concepts, which are connected to other entities (like endurants, perdurants, and abstracts) by the relation of classification. In particular, roles are concepts that are anti-rigid and founded, meaning that (i) they have dynamic properties and (ii) they have a relational nature, i.e. they depend on other roles and on contexts." xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022, confirmed against xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004 directly verified: both xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022 (arXiv preprint) and, as of 2026-07-01, xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004 itself (AAAI-hosted PDF, manually extracted) Classified philosophical because OntoClean's meta-properties (rigidity, dependence) are themselves a specific philosophical framework, not just a structural definition.
DOLCE-driven approaches (not core DOLCE) Description (and the absence of a Relator-equivalent) technical direct quotation Masolo et al. (2004)'s own apparatus: Concept, Description, and Role are introduced as reified "non-agentive social objects," linked by defined-by (DF) and used-by (US) relations; entities are connected to concepts by the classification relation CF(x, y, t). A concept is a Role iff it is anti-rigid (D1) and founded (D2): "A concept x is founded if its definition involves (at least) another concept y (definitional dependence) such that for each entity classified by x, there is an entity classified by y which is external to it." No entity in this apparatus mediates or is a truthmaker for a relationship between two specific bearers the way a UFO Relator does — Description defines a Concept/Role in general, not a particular relationship instance. xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004 verified: AAAI-hosted PDF (KR2004), manually extracted 2026-07-01, checked directly (not just via xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022's report) Resolves uncertainty-003: confirms, from the primary source itself, that DOLCE-driven Role literature has no Relator-equivalent term.
UFO Role technical direct quotation "In UFO, roles are anti-rigid types whose instantiation occur in virtue of relational conditions. Roles that can be instantiated by individuals of a single kind[] are simply termed roles, while those that can be instantiated by individuals of different kinds... are termed roleMixins." Examples: "employee as a role of a person in the scope of an employment relator, and husband as a role of a person in the scope of a marriage relator." xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 verified: Applied Ontology 2021 PDF, manually extracted 2026-07-01 Corrects the earlier paraphrase's framing slightly: UFO's Role is specifically an anti-rigid sortal (a specialization of a Kind) with relational contingent conditions, not just "a type that is anti-rigid and relationally dependent" in the abstract — it sits within UFO's broader sortal/non-sortal type taxonomy (Kind, Subkind, Phase, Role, Category, Phase Mixin, Role Mixin, Mixin).
UFO Relator technical direct quotation "[A] relator is a moment (i.e., an existentially dependent entity) that is an aggregation of qua individuals... For instance, John and Mary's Marriage is composed of John-qua-husband-of-Mary and Mary-qua-wife-of-John. A relator is, hence, existentially dependent on multiple individuals, namely, the bearers of its constituting qua individuals. Examples of relators include marriages, enrollments, employments, contracts, and presidential mandates. Externally dependent modes as well as relators serve as truthmakers of material relations." xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 verified: Applied Ontology 2021 PDF, manually extracted 2026-07-01 Distinct from Role itself, but closely paired with it in UFO's theory — the relational dependency a Role requires is often grounded in a Relator (e.g., "husband" is a role held in the scope of a "marriage" relator). Confirms the earlier paraphrase closely; now a direct quotation with the primary source's own worked example.
SUMO SocialRole technical direct quotation "(subclass SocialRole RelationalAttribute)... The Class of all Attributes that specify the position or status of a CognitiveAgent within an Organization or other Group." xwkont:ref:sumo-niles-pease-2001 verified: Merge.kif, documentation SocialRole EnglishLanguage, fetched and read directly 2026-07-01 Corrects the earlier draft's claimed hierarchy: SocialRole is a subclass of RelationalAttribute specifically (itself a partition of Attribute), not directly of Attribute. The earlier "Plumber is a subclass of SocialRole" example was not found in SUMO's core Merge.kif in this pass — it may exist in a domain-extension .kif file not checked, or may have been an illustrative gloss in the secondary source rather than an actual SUMO class; not asserted as verified.
GFO Role (+ Processual role, Social role, Relational role) technical direct quotation Role: rdfs:subClassOf Concrete (no further skos:definition). Processual_role: "Processual roles are dependent processes. They are roles with a process as context." rdfs:subClassOf Process, Role. Social_role: rdfs:subClassOf Independent, Role; owl:disjointWith Processual_role, Relational_role. Relational_role: rdfs:subClassOf Dependent, Role; defined via a restriction on role_of some Relator. xwkont:ref:gfo verified: modules/gfo-base.owl, classes Role, Processual_role, Social_role, Relational_role, fetched and read directly 2026-07-02 Social_role's classification under Independent (disjoint from Dependent) directly contradicts BFO/DOLCE-driven/UFO's shared assumption that a role is a dependent particular — a genuine metaphysical divergence, not just a labeling difference. Relational_role, by contrast, is Dependent and role_of a Relator, directly paralleling UFO's own Role/Relator pairing (see relation.md).
YAMATO Role (context-dependent, foundational to all types) technical direct quotation "The notion of quality role satisfies context-dependence which is one of the most important properties of roles. In the case of teacher role, a school is its context in which teacher role is defined." Separately: "roles are defined within a context which they necessarily depends on in our role theory (Mizoguchi 2007)... In fact, roles are used in defining all the types in YAMATO." xwkont:ref:yamato-mizoguchi-2010 verified: YAMATO101216.pdf, "Quality and quantity" and "Roles, functions and relations" sections, extracted 2026-07-02 The "teacher role... school" example directly parallels BFO's own "student role... university" example — a context-dependent, non-abstract treatment, placing YAMATO in the same camp as BFO/DOLCE-driven/UFO rather than GFO's Social_role-as-Independent exception or SUMO's abstracta. YAMATO's own text discloses the full role theory is not incorporated into this paper — it defers to Mizoguchi (2007), not independently fetched, and its Hozo implementation tool.
TUpper (no reified Role class — informal mention only) technical non-equivalence "(participates_in x a t) is TRUE in an interpretation of TUpper if and only if x plays some role that is not pre-specified in an occurrence of the activity a at the timepoint t." xwkont:ref:tupper-colore verified absence (of a reified class): TUpper-Terms.html, participates_in entry, fetched and read directly 2026-07-02 The word "role" appears only inside participates_in's informal prose gloss — TUpper reifies no Role entity, consistent with quality.md's and relation.md's TUpper findings across this entire dependent-particular family.
GUM RolePlaying technical direct quotation "A circumstantial relationship that expresses a restriction in which a facet of one of the participants in a process is relevant for the actualization of the process... It is frequently realized in English by a prepositional phrase with the preposition 'as'; For example: 'As a president, he was terrible, although as a golfer he was not too bad.'" rdfs:subClassOf Symbolization; owl:disjointWith Signification. xwkont:ref:gum-owl verified: GUM-31.owl, class RolePlaying, fetched and read directly 2026-07-02 A relation type (participant-role relation), not an object/entity type — the same structural pattern already found for GUM's Information-Artifact analog (Signification/Symbolization, information-artifact.md) and Relation analog (Relating, relation.md): GUM consistently reifies this whole family as relations, not entities.

Semantic Comparison Notes

Note ID Dimension Claim type Note Supporting references Confidence
note-001 philosophical editorial observation SUMO's SocialRole (subclass of RelationalAttribute, itself a partition of Attribute) confirms quality.md's finding that SUMO systematically classifies dependent-particular-type concepts as abstract entities, not as BFO/DOLCE-driven/UFO's trope-like/relationally-dependent particulars. This is now a two-concept pattern (Quality and Role), not an isolated case. xwkont:ref:bfo-2020, xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022, xwkont:ref:ufo-2021, xwkont:ref:sumo-niles-pease-2001 high
note-002 philosophical editorial observation DOLCE-driven extension literature and UFO both ground Role in an anti-rigidity/foundation meta-property apparatus in the OntoClean lineage (Guarino & Welty, 2002; Masolo et al., 2004's own D1/D2 anti-rigidity/foundation definitions trace to the same Husserl-derived foundation notion); UFO explicitly states it incorporates "the Ontology of Universals underlying OntoClean." BFO's Role, by contrast, is defined structurally (extrinsic/externally-grounded realizable entity, not ceasing to change the bearer's physical make-up) without invoking this meta-property framework. Confirmed directly that DOLCE core has no Role treatment at all to compare against — only its extension literature does, now independently verified against Masolo et al. (2004) itself. xwkont:ref:bfo-2020, xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022, xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004, xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 high
note-003 technical editorial observation UFO's Relator has no clearly identified counterpart in BFO's or SUMO's definitions found in this pass. DOLCE-driven extension literature (Masolo et al., 2004, confirmed by direct reading) has a related reification apparatus for social roles (Concept, Description, Role, the classification relation CF), but no term equivalent to Relator specifically: its Description construct defines a Concept/Role in general rather than mediating a specific relationship instance between particular bearers the way a Relator does. This is now a confirmed negative finding, not an open question. xwkont:ref:ufo-2021, xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004 high
note-004 technical editorial observation This crosswalk's central DOLCE finding — "DOLCE does not formalize functions and roles" — parallels information-artifact.md's finding that BFO's information-artifact analog (IAO) and DOLCE's (DOLCE Lite Plus/DUL) both live in extension literature rather than core specifications. Across this project's crosswalks, "core DOLCE explicitly declines to formalize X" is now a repeated, citable pattern for at least two concepts (Role, Information Object), not a one-off gap in either case. xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022 high
note-005 philosophical editorial observation GFO's own Role taxonomy splits on exactly the dependent/independent axis this crosswalk's other sources agree on: Relational_role (Dependent, role_of some Relator) fits BFO/DOLCE-driven/UFO's shared assumption and directly parallels UFO's own Role/Relator pairing (per relation.md's note-005, on the Relator side specifically); but Social_role is explicitly classified Independent (owl:disjointWith Dependent) — a genuine metaphysical divergence within GFO's own apparatus, not just a labeling difference from the other sources. GFO is the only source in this crosswalk to treat any role subtype as independent of a bearer. xwkont:ref:gfo, xwkont:ref:bfo-2020, xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004, xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 high
note-006 technical editorial observation YAMATO's "teacher role... school" example is directly comparable in form to BFO's own "student role... university" example — both context-dependent, non-abstract Role treatments. YAMATO goes further than any other source in this crosswalk by claiming roles are foundational to its entire type system ("roles are used in defining all the types in YAMATO"), though this claim is not itself elaborated in the paper — it defers to a separate publication (Mizoguchi 2007, not independently fetched) and the Hozo implementation tool, the same deferral pattern already found for YAMATO's Relation content in relation.md. xwkont:ref:yamato-mizoguchi-2010, xwkont:ref:bfo-2020 medium-high
note-007 technical editorial observation GUM's RolePlaying continues a pattern now confirmed across three separate concepts in this repository (Information Artifact, Relation, and now Role): GUM consistently reifies this whole family of content — content that BFO/DOLCE/UFO treat as dependent entities — as relation types (subclasses of Symbolization/Intensive) instead. This is not concept-specific; it is a structural feature of how GUM's linguistically-motivated ontology is organized. xwkont:ref:gum-owl high

But the two frameworks still differ in formal apparatus (DOLCE-driven: CF-classification of a Concept; UFO: anti-rigid sortal specializing a Kind) — the same kind of divergence mapping-002/mapping-003 already use to withhold exact-equivalence-candidate for BFO against these same two sources. Applying that standard consistently: close-match, not exact-equivalence-candidate. high confidence in close-match, higher than mapping-002/003's medium: both sources are independently fetched and directly verified (2026-07-01), and the informal-level convergence here is textually closer than either BFO comparison — a confidently-established, not open, finding. xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004, xwkont:ref:ufo-2021

xwkont:mapping:role:010 xwkont-core:Role unknown GUM:RolePlaying none semapv:ManualMappingCuration candidate low GUM's RolePlaying is a relation type (subclass of Symbolization), not an object/entity type — the same pattern already found for GUM's Information-Artifact and Relation analogs (note-007). Not confidently placed in any existing category. xwkont:ref:gum-owl

Uncertainty, Non-Equivalence, and Open Questions

Item ID Type Description Impact Follow-up
uncertainty-001 ~~uncertainty~~ resolved 2026-07-01, as a scope correction Confirmed directly (xwkont:ref:dolce-borgo-2022): "DOLCE does not formalize functions and roles." The Role/OntoClean content in this crosswalk comes from DOLCE-driven extension literature (Masolo et al., 2004 — the "Borgo et al., 2010" pairing is a citation-precision issue, see Scope Note), not core DOLCE. Masolo et al. (2004) was independently fetched and directly verified 2026-07-01 (xwkont:ref:masolo-vieu-2004), superseding the earlier secondhand-only report via the 2022 paper. Confidence on mapping-001 raised to medium-high; mapping-002 remains medium (formal-apparatus divergence from BFO, not a sourcing gap). Resolved for both the scope question and the independent-fetch follow-up.
uncertainty-002 ~~non-equivalence~~ resolved 2026-07-01 SUMO's SocialRole is a subclass of RelationalAttribute (a partition of Attribute), confirmed directly against Merge.kif — diverging from BFO/DOLCE/UFO's dependent-particular treatment, same pattern as quality.md. The earlier "Plumber" example was not found in Merge.kif and is not asserted as verified. High confidence in the non-equivalence, now on a verified rather than inferred basis (mapping-004/mapping-005). Resolved for the core finding. If the "Plumber" example is needed elsewhere, check SUMO's domain-extension .kif files specifically.
uncertainty-003 ~~open-question~~ resolved 2026-07-01 UFO's Relator has no clearly identified counterpart in BFO or SUMO. Confirmed directly against Masolo et al. (2004) itself: DOLCE-driven Role literature's apparatus (Concept, Description, Role, classification) has no Relator-equivalent term — Description defines concepts/roles in general, not a specific relationship instance between particular bearers. note-003 confidence raised from low to high; mapping-001/mapping-002 confidence raised (medium to medium-high / medium). Resolved — no further action needed.
uncertainty-004 open-question GFO's Role, Processual_role, and Relational_role carry no skos:definition beyond the one quoted for Processual_role and the structural axioms for the others — GFO's situation module (not fetched in this pass, per information-artifact.md's uncertainty-004 and relation.md's uncertainty-004) might contain more elaborated Role content, including a fuller account of why Social_role specifically is Independent. mapping-006/mapping-007's confidence and the Social_role-as-Independent finding rest on structural axioms alone, not a prose rationale from GFO's own text. Check GFO's situation module for more elaborated Role content if a future pass wants to understand the rationale behind Social_role's Independent classification.
uncertainty-005 open-question YAMATO's own OWL/Hozo files were not fetched in this pass (registration-gated download; see xwkont:ref:yamato-mizoguchi-2010), so correspondence-006/mapping-008 are cited by quotation, not by class IRI. YAMATO's own text explicitly defers its full role theory to Mizoguchi (2007), a separate publication not independently fetched in this pass. Confidence on mapping-008 (capped at medium-high) could rise if Mizoguchi (2007) is fetched and read directly. Fetch Mizoguchi (2007) or YAMATO's OWL/Hozo files if either becomes accessible later.

Review History

Review ID Date Outcome Notes
xwkont:review:role:2026-07-01:01 2026-07-01 Passed — advanced draftreviewed Checked against docs/governance/contributing.md's Review Checklist: scope preserved; BFO/DOLCE/UFO/SUMO content all verified directly, including a significant scope correction (core DOLCE does not formalize Role at all — the content traces to DOLCE-driven extension literature) and a resolved open question (no Relator-equivalent term in that literature); mapping categories/confidence valid (mapping-001's medium-high value now compliant with ADR-0013). No undisclosed gaps found. Self-review, not independent third-party review.
2026-07-02 Not yet reviewed — status reverted reviewedcandidate ADR-0015 buildout added GFO/YAMATO/GUM correspondences (005-007), five new mappings (006-010), three new notes (005-007), and two new uncertainty items (004-005). Standout finding: GFO's own Role taxonomy splits on the dependent/independent axis internally — Relational_role fits the shared dependent-particular assumption (and parallels UFO's Role/Relator pairing per relation.md), but Social_role is explicitly Independent, the only source in this crosswalk to treat any role subtype as bearer-independent. YAMATO's "teacher role... school" example directly parallels BFO's own example. GUM's RolePlaying continues its now three-concept pattern (Information Artifact, Relation, Role) of reifying this content as a relation type rather than an entity type. TUpper again reifies nothing. This completes the ADR-0015 buildout across all 8 concept crosswalks. All findings directly verified against already-fetched primary artifacts; no re-fetching needed beyond a fresh YAMATO PDF section. Pending maintainer review before advancing back to reviewed.
xwkont:review:role:2026-07-02:02 2026-07-02 Passed — advanced candidatereviewed Consolidated review pass, per docs/governance/contributing.md's Review Checklist, of the ADR-0015 buildout content across all 8 concept crosswalks — the final crosswalk in that pass. Checked: scope preserved; every xwkont:ref:* citation resolves; correspondence/mapping/note/uncertainty ID numbering sequential with no gaps or duplicates. Correction (2026-07-06, full-corpus audit): this entry originally claimed "all three medium-high mappings here state a sourcing-driven reason" — true for mapping-006/008 (genuine GFO documentation gap; unfetched Mizoguchi 2007), false for mapping-001, which used exact-equivalence-candidate/medium-high despite its own rationale disclosing a formal-apparatus divergence identical in kind to what mapping-002/003 already use to withhold that category for BFO against the same two sources. Corrected to close-match at high confidence in this pass, applying the file's own standard consistently — see docs/methodology/crosswalk-runbook.md's governing principle. Independently re-verified GFO's Social_role/Independent classification and YAMATO's "teacher role... school" quotation against the fetched artifacts and found no transcription errors. With this crosswalk advanced, all 8 concept crosswalks are now reviewed again. Self-review performed at the maintainer's explicit request, not independent third-party review.

Future Work

  • ~~Confirm whether DOLCE's Role/OntoClean content traces to core DOLCE~~ — done 2026-07-01; resolved as a scope correction, not just a citation fix (uncertainty-001).
  • ~~Read SUMO's current source files directly~~ — done 2026-07-01, uncertainty-002 resolved.
  • ~~Read DOLCE's social-role literature directly (Masolo et al. 2004) for a Relator-equivalent term~~ — done 2026-07-01, uncertainty-003 resolved: no Relator-equivalent term found in the primary source itself.
  • ~~Read UFO's 2021 paper directly~~ — done 2026-07-01, reusing the extraction performed for object.md/process.md; Role and Relator content verified.
  • ~~With Continuant/Occurrent, Object, Event, Process, Quality, and Role now covered, and all four sources directly verified for this concept, the confirmed SUMO-abstracta pattern (note-001, cross-referenced from quality.md) is tracked as a to-do standalone write-up~~ — done 2026-07-01 at docs/methodology/sumo-modeling-patterns.md.
  • ~~Extend GFO/YAMATO/TUpper/GUM correspondences to this crosswalk~~ — done 2026-07-02 (ADR-0015 buildout, 8 of 8 crosswalks — buildout now complete across all concept crosswalks). Pending maintainer review (uncertainty-004/uncertainty-005 remain open).
  • Check GFO's situation module for more elaborated Role content (uncertainty-004); fetch Mizoguchi (2007) or YAMATO's OWL/Hozo files if either becomes accessible (uncertainty-005).
