Non-physical / Social Object

Local identifier: xwkont:concept:non-physical-social-object Slug: non-physical-social-object Editorial status: reviewed Created: 2026-07-07 Modified: 2026-07-07

Scope Note

This crosswalk compares how the checked source ontologies model non-physical bearer-level entities that are not physical objects or amounts of matter: DOLCE's base-module non-physical-endurant / non-physical-object branch, plus the closest non-physical or object-adjacent analogs found in the other seven source ontologies.

DOLCE-Lite.owl is the only source that directly reifies the in-scope axis as a formal class in its core module. Its base file defines non-physical-endurant and non-physical-object directly, but not the classic DOLCE-family Mental-Object / Social-Object leaf split. That social-object apparatus lives in other DOLCE-family artifacts already crosswalked elsewhere, so this crosswalk cites those crosswalks by ID where relevant instead of re-deriving them. UFO is a second, independently-confirmed source (found during review, not in the original draft): its 2021 paper uses the identical phrase "non-physical endurants," with a worked example, in a footnote on the constitution relation — not a reified class or formal definition, but a direct terminological and conceptual match, not incidental word use.

Core.ttl placement was resolved 2026-07-07 (session-050): xwkont-core:NonPhysicalObject, a single umbrella class under Continuant, not split into a separate Social Object branch.

Source Definitions and Contextual Notes

Source Term or identifier Dimension Claim type Definition, quotation, or paraphrase Reference Locator Notes
DOLCE non-physical-endurant technical direct quotation "An endurant with no mass, generically constantly depending on some agent. Non-physical endurants can have physical constituents (e.g. in the case of members of a collection)." The base file makes this the root of the non-physical endurant branch, with rdfs:subClassOf endurant, part only non-physical-endurant, and has-quality only abstract-quality. xwkont:ref:dolce-lite-owl DOLCE-Lite.owl, owl:Class#non-physical-endurant, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Corrected during independent review (2026-07-07): the draft's original quotation truncated this rdfs:comment to "An endurant with no mass," dropping the constant-dependence-on-an-agent clause and the physical-constituents caveat — both restored here from the primary source. owl:disjointWith is asserted on sibling classes rather than locally on this class: physical-endurant is disjoint with non-physical-endurant, and arbitrary-sum is also disjoint with it.
DOLCE non-physical-object both direct quotation "Formerly known as description." The class is a unitary endurant with no mass, generically dependent on an agent and a communication act, and the file says that both descriptions and concepts are non-physical objects. rdfs:subClassOf non-physical-endurant; part only non-physical-object; generically-dependent-on some physical-endurant. xwkont:ref:dolce-lite-owl DOLCE-Lite.owl, owl:Class#non-physical-object, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 No further subclasses beneath non-physical-object were found in the base module.
BFO generically dependent continuant technical paraphrase An entity that exists because there is at least one copy whose content or pattern can be shared with other copies. This is the closest BFO non-physical dependent branch on the core-file side. xwkont:ref:bfo-2020 bfo-core.ttl, class generically dependent continuant, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 immaterial entity is also present in the same file, but it is a different class and not a social-object branch.
BFO immaterial entity technical paraphrase An independent continuant with no material entity as continuant part. This is a non-material hit, but it is not the same modeling choice as DOLCE's non-physical bearer branch. xwkont:ref:bfo-2020 bfo-core.ttl, class immaterial entity, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Relevant as a lexical hit only, not as a social-object analog.
SUMO Abstract technical paraphrase SUMO puts List, Proposition, Attribute, Relation, and related content-like classes on the abstract side of its Entity partition. That is the broad non-physical bucket closest to this candidate. xwkont:ref:sumo-niles-pease-2001 Merge.kif, Abstract, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Broad abstract branch, not a social-object hierarchy.
SUMO Proposition technical direct quotation "Propositions are Abstract entities that express a complete thought or a set of such thoughts... A Proposition is an abstraction that may have multiple representations: strings, sounds, icons, etc." This is the most content-like SUMO hit in the checked material, but it is still propositional content rather than a bearer-level social object. xwkont:ref:sumo-niles-pease-2001 Merge.kif, Proposition, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Corrected during independent review (2026-07-07): the draft's original text ("An abstract entity that may have multiple representations") was a paraphrase mislabeled as a direct quotation — restored to Merge.kif's actual documentation string, including the primary "complete thought" definition the paraphrase dropped. Useful as a nearby non-physical analog, not as an exact object branch.
UFO non-physical endurants technical direct quotation "We do admit, however, relations of constitution between non-physical endurants. For example, a software program is constituted by software code, not identical to it." xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 complete extracted paper text reused from the 2026-07-06 extraction (footnote 8, in the constitution-relation discussion); live fetch attempts in this session were blocked by HTTP 403 Found during independent review (2026-07-07), missed entirely by the Codex draft, which claimed "the searched text does not introduce a dedicated non-physical/social-object class" without having actually located this passage. UFO does not reify "non-physical endurant" as its own formal class or give it a dedicated definition the way DOLCE does — it appears only in this one footnote, in service of an argument about the constitution relation's asymmetry — but it is a direct, literal use of the identical phrase DOLCE uses for its own branch root, with a worked example (a software program constituted by, but not identical to, its software code) that is itself a plausible non-physical-object instance. This is the strongest textual hit of any of the 7 non-DOLCE sources checked.
UFO Object / Relator / Mode / Quality both editorial observation The paper builds a four-category ontology with object types, moments, and abstract particulars. Beyond the "non-physical endurants" footnote above, the searched text does not introduce a further dedicated non-physical/social-object class; the closest additional formal terms are Object, Relator, Mode, and Quality, plus the theoretical phrase abstract particulars. xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 complete extracted paper text reused from the 2026-07-06 extraction; live fetch attempts in this session were blocked by HTTP 403 Formal class-level hit, but not on the requested object/social-object axis.
GFO Material_object / Material_persistant / Social_stratum / Social_role both paraphrase gfo-base.owl reifies a material-object branch and a separate mental/social stratum apparatus, but no dedicated non-physical/social-object class. Material_persistant says these are the entities sometimes called continuants or objects; social and mental content is handled via Social_stratum, Mental_stratum, Social_role, and Relator. xwkont:ref:gfo modules/gfo-base.owl, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Reified classes are present, but not the requested bearer-level non-physical/social-object branch.
YAMATO informational object / representation both paraphrase The report has a dedicated section on informational objects and another on representation. It treats them as content-bearing things and distinguishes representation from representing thing, but the fetchable report does not reify a dedicated social-object class. xwkont:ref:yamato-mizoguchi-2010 independently re-verified 2026-07-07 (session-051): YAMATO101216.pdf re-fetched fresh via the Wayback Machine snapshot and re-extracted with pdftotext, grepped for "social object," "non-physical," and "nonphysical" -- zero hits for all three. The informational-object/representation apparatus was independently confirmed present (section-level discussion of informational objects, representation vs. representing thing). Prior review flagged this row as inherited from the Codex draft, not independently re-checked; now confirmed. Section-level conceptual apparatus only, confirmed absent of a social-object class by independent full-text search, not merely inherited from the draft.
TUpper object technical direct quotation "An object is anything that is not a timepoint, nor an activity nor an activity-occurrence." The prose also says objects can be concrete or abstract things that participate in an activity. xwkont:ref:tupper-colore TUpper-Terms.html, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Broad object class, not a social-object branch.
GUM SimpleThing technical direct quotation "An entity which may participate in a configuration." GUM's object-like top level is a linguistic SimpleThing / Process split, not a non-physical/social-object hierarchy. xwkont:ref:gum-owl GUM-31.owl.txt, class SimpleThing, fetched and read directly 2026-07-07 Broad object-like class, but linguistically motivated.

UFO's own paper uses the identical phrase "non-physical endurants," with a worked example, in a footnote on the constitution relation — not a reified class, but a real terminological and conceptual match, the strongest of any non-DOLCE source checked. The paper's broader object/moment/abstract-particular apparatus remains relevant background but is not itself the primary hit.

Semantic Comparison Notes

Note ID Dimension Claim type Note Supporting references Confidence
note-001 technical editorial observation DOLCE-Lite.owl is the only checked base module that directly reifies the non-physical endurant/object axis in the requested sense. The file's internal structure is shallow: non-physical-endurant is the branch root, and non-physical-object is its only base-module child. xwkont:ref:dolce-lite-owl high
note-002 technical editorial observation The classic DOLCE social-object leaf split is not in DOLCE-Lite.owl itself. That matters because this draft is deliberately anchored to the base module only; the extension material that introduces Mental-Object / Social-Object is already crosswalked elsewhere and should stay cited there. xwkont:ref:dolce-lite-owl, docs/crosswalks/concepts/situation-state-of-affairs.md, docs/crosswalks/concepts/role.md, docs/crosswalks/concepts/information-artifact.md high
note-003 technical editorial observation BFO, SUMO, TUpper, and GUM all have broad object or content branches that can host non-physical entities, but none of them reifies a DOLCE-style non-physical/social-object hierarchy. Their best hits are broader than the candidate, not exact peers. xwkont:ref:bfo-2020, xwkont:ref:sumo-niles-pease-2001, xwkont:ref:tupper-colore, xwkont:ref:gum-owl medium-high
note-004 both editorial observation Corrected during independent review (2026-07-07): UFO's own paper explicitly uses the phrase "non-physical endurants" (footnote 8, constitution-relation discussion), with a worked example (a software program constituted by, but not identical to, its software code) — this is a genuine second source for the candidate, not merely nearby background, even though UFO does not reify the phrase as its own formal class or definition the way DOLCE does. The paper's broader four-category apparatus (objects, moments, abstract particulars) remains relevant structural context but is secondary to this direct textual hit. xwkont:ref:ufo-2021 medium
note-005 technical editorial observation GFO splits the territory differently: material objects on one side, and mental/social strata plus roles on the other. That gives it social vocabulary, but not a social-object branch. xwkont:ref:gfo medium-high
note-006 technical editorial observation YAMATO's treatment of informational objects is explicitly about representation and content-bearing things, not a bearer-level social-object class. The report is useful as a conceptual analog, but it is prose-level rather than reified in the fetched artifact. xwkont:ref:yamato-mizoguchi-2010 medium

Mapping Assertions or Candidate Relations

Per ADR-0009, each mapping records a predicate_id (SSSOM/SKOS predicate, or none for XwkOnt-only categories) and a mapping_justification (SEMAPV term, e.g. semapv:ManualMappingCuration) in addition to the free-text rationale.

xwkont:mapping:non-physical-social-object:008 TUpper:object broader-than xwkont-core:NonPhysicalObject (candidate) skos:broadMatch semapv:ManualMappingCuration candidate low TUpper's object is intentionally broad enough to include abstract things; that makes it broader than the candidate, not a social-object branch. xwkont:ref:tupper-colore

Uncertainty, Non-Equivalence, and Open Questions

Item ID Type Description Impact Follow-up
uncertainty-001 ~~open-question~~ Resolved 2026-07-07 (session-050): the maintainer confirmed umbrella-only placement — xwkont-core:NonPhysicalObject as a single class under Continuant, not split into a separate Social Object branch, since DOLCE-Lite's own base module supports only the broader class. See data/ontology/core.ttl and docs/ontology/core-ontology.md. Should XwkOnt eventually model this as one umbrella class or as a split between a non-physical-object branch and a separate social-object branch? DOLCE-Lite.owl itself only supports the first half in its base module. Blocks final core.ttl placement. Resolved -- no further action needed.
uncertainty-002 non-equivalence The classic DOLCE Mental-Object / Social-Object / Agentive-Social-Object / Non-Agentive-Social-Object tree is not defined in DOLCE-Lite.owl. That tree belongs to other DOLCE-family artifacts already crosswalked elsewhere. Prevents re-deriving the extension-module findings inside this draft. Keep citing the existing crosswalk IDs when those artifacts are relevant.
uncertainty-003 uncertainty BFO, SUMO, GFO, YAMATO, TUpper, and GUM each provide a nearest hit, but most are broader or structurally different rather than exact peers. UFO is the exception, found during review — it uses the identical phrase "non-physical endurants," but only informally (a footnote, not a reified class), so it is recorded at related/medium confidence rather than close-match. Keeps the mapping categories conservative for 6 of the 7 non-DOLCE sources; UFO is the strongest secondary hit. Revisit only if a later source or extension module reifies a more precise non-physical/social-object class, or if UFO's own OWL/gUFO artifacts (not consulted here) formalize this footnote usage.
uncertainty-004 ~~open-question~~ Resolved 2026-07-07 (session-050): xwkont-core:NonPhysicalObject (not NonPhysicalSocialObject -- renamed to match the actual placed class) now exists in data/ontology/core.ttl, under Continuant. Mapping rows' candidate placeholder renamed to match (session-051 cleanup). xwkont-core:NonPhysicalSocialObject does not yet exist in data/ontology/core.ttl. Core placement remains unresolved. Resolved -- no further action needed.
uncertainty-005 ~~uncertainty~~ Resolved 2026-07-07 (session-051): YAMATO101216.pdf re-fetched fresh via the Wayback Machine snapshot and re-extracted with pdftotext; full-text search for "social object," "non-physical," and "nonphysical" found zero hits, independently confirming the absence claim previously carried unverified from the Codex draft. YAMATO's absence finding (informational object / representation, no dedicated social-object class) was not independently re-fetched during the session-048 review pass -- carried from the Codex draft. This source's absence claim was unverified, not confirmed, unlike the directly re-fetched sources. Resolved -- no further action needed.

Review History

Review ID Date Outcome Notes
2026-07-07 (unreviewed) Draft created (Codex, GPT-5.4-Mini, Extra-High) after direct primary-source verification of DOLCE-Lite.owl and full-text searches of the other seven sources.
2026-07-07 reviewed Independently re-verified against all 8 primary sources (session-048). Three defects found and corrected: (1) the DOLCE non-physical-endurant rdfs:comment quotation was truncated, dropping the constant-dependence-on-an-agent clause and the physical-constituents caveat; (2) the BFO correspondence table cited BFO_0000142 for "immaterial entity" — that IRI is actually "fiat line" in bfo-core.ttl; the correct IRI is BFO_0000141; (3) SUMO's Proposition row was labeled direct quotation but contained a paraphrase, missing the primary "complete thought" definition. A genuine second source was also found, missed entirely by the original draft: UFO's 2021 paper uses the identical phrase "non-physical endurants" (footnote 8, constitution-relation discussion) with a worked example — not a reified class, but a direct terminological/conceptual hit, added as correspondence 004 and mapping 005 at related/medium confidence. GFO's absence finding (Material_object/Material_persistant/Social_stratum/Social_role present, no dedicated non-physical/social-object class) was independently re-confirmed directly against modules/gfo-base.owl. GUM's SimpleThing quotation and IRI were confirmed exact. TUpper's object quotation was confirmed exact (reusing the prior verified quote already on record in xwkont:ref:tupper-colore). YAMATO's paraphrase-level absence claim was not independently re-fetched this pass; treat as consistent with, but not independently re-confirmed against, prior crosswalks' own YAMATO findings. Advanced directly to reviewed per the reviewed-eligibility criterion: DOLCE-Lite.owl is DOLCE's own base module, an authoritative core source for non-physical-endurant/non-physical-object.
2026-07-07 Cross-reference update — YAMATO absence confirmed, no editorial_status change Resolved uncertainty-005: YAMATO101216.pdf re-fetched fresh and full-text searched for "social object," "non-physical," and "nonphysical" — zero hits, independently confirming the absence claim. Also recorded uncertainty-001's and uncertainty-004's resolutions here for traceability (already decided in core.ttl by session-050: umbrella-only xwkont-core:NonPhysicalObject); renamed this crosswalk's own mapping placeholders from NonPhysicalSocialObject to NonPhysicalObject to match. editorial_status remains reviewed.

Future Work

  • ~~Confirm whether the XwkOnt core should keep this as a single umbrella concept or split off a separate social-object follow-up~~ — done 2026-07-07 (session-050): umbrella only, xwkont-core:NonPhysicalObject (uncertainty-001 resolved).
  • If the maintainer wants the classic DOLCE social-object leaves documented in this concept family, fetch and cite the extension artifact there rather than reusing the base-module file.
  • Revisit the broad-analog sources only if a later artifact reifies a closer non-physical/social-object branch.
  • ~~YAMATO's absence finding (informational object / representation, no dedicated social-object class) was not independently re-fetched during the session-048 review pass~~ — done 2026-07-07 (session-051): re-fetched and confirmed absent (uncertainty-005 resolved).
  • UFO's gUFO/OWL artifacts (not consulted in this crosswalk, which used only the 2021 paper's extracted text) may formalize the "non-physical endurants" footnote as an actual class — worth checking if gUFO is ever added as its own independently-cited source.
